Burr Walnut Press Cupboard

1900 - 1920
Description

A wonderful press cupboard, or compactum, in burr walnut by the prestigious firm of Hampton and Sons of Pall Mall, London. Of fine construction in walnut and with stunning burr walnut veneers. It is of concave form and stands on lovely carved hairy-paw feet. It is of compact proportions so would easily fit into the modern home. It affords excellent storage capacity with a pair of cupboards flanking a bank of 6 central graduated drawers. One cupboard is fitted with a series of shelves , the other set aside for hanging space. The top of the cupboard is cross banded and carved decorations can be found to the edges and corners. We have had this item sympathetically repolished to a very high standard ; it is now offered for sale in excellent condition with a lovely warm colour and patina.

Dimensions:

Width 130cms

Depth (max) 54cms

Hampton and Sons.

Established in 1830 in Cranbourn Street, Leicester Square by William Hampton, later being joined by his sons, George and William, the company moved to 8 Pall Mall East, adjacent to Trafalgar Square, in very large premises, trading as builders and surveyors, estate agents, ‘antique and modern furniture dealers’, general furnishers, upholsterers, plumbers and electricians. Their commissions included, inter alia, the furnishing of the Royal Yacht Britannia, the liners Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth, the Theatre Royal in Drury lane, and the palaces of the Nizam of Hyderabad and the Maharajah of Kashmir. An incendiary bomb destroyed the building in 1940, after which they moved to Kensington High Street, where they traded until 1960.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
