Antique Half Saddlebag Face, Timuri Tribes, Western Afghanistan.

19th century
Description

Beautiful vegetable colours abound in this half saddlebag face - once part of a large double bag. The indigo-blue inner field glows with fine, lustrous wool and the ivory outer border with its depiction of stylised plants, frames the field powerfully. Within the central madder-red square, zoomorphic horned creatures are depicted and the four ivory '8-pointed stars' in the blue field link up with the single ivory '8-pointed star' in the centre of the bag, symbolising the magic number '5' - protection. The brown colour in the central red square has corroded due to the wool having been mordanted over 100 years ago and thus corroding or eating away at the wool. This is a superb example of mid 19th century Timuri weaving.

Size: 83cm x 66cm (2' 9" x 2' 2").

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
