Antique 19th Century Apprentice Made Miniature Linen Press

19th century
Description

A beautiful example of an apprenticeman's mahogany and inlaid linen press dating from the early 1800s. The craftsmanship and detail is superb. It is bordered with sycamore lines, having a swan neck pediment, enclosed by a pair of doors and with two short and two long drawers below with button handles and lozenge key plates, on bracket feet.

The doors and both long drawers are lockable and come with their original working keys. Each drawer has got beautiful hand-made dovetail joints and the inside of the cupboard is lined with blue paper.

Each element has been finished to the highest standard and the result is a superb piece. It has been very well looked after over the years and is in excellent condition for its age. There are no major damages and the wood has a lovely rich patina. The drawers all run well and the hinges on the doors are strong. There is a small chip on the side of the piece which has been filled and repaired at some point. As is often the case with a piece of such age the main carcass has shrunk a tad over the period of 170+ years and there are some very slight hairline fractures to the veneer but as can be seen in the numerous photographs they do not detract from what is a fine looking item.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions please ask.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
