Inlaid Mahogany Cupboard by Edwards and Roberts

1900 - 1920
Description

A splendid inlaid mahogany cupboard, or gentlemans press, by the renowned maker Edwards and Roberts of London. Of fine quality construction using a very high grade of dense Cuban mahogany. The top is cross banded in satinwood , which is replicated to the drawer fronts. The freeze is decorated with garlands of harebells and a central paterae. The cupboard doors are adorned with profuse floral marquetry inlay of the highest quality. This piece of furniture provides extensive storage space; the central cupboards doors (lockable, key supplied) open to reveal a series of 4 pull-out trays. The cupboards are flanked by two banks of 4 graduated drawers, each fitted with their original brass handles. This item would serve well in a variety of room settings in the modern home, eg dining room, bedroom or living room, potentially as a TV cupboard. We have had it cleaned and waxed in our workshops so it is now offered for sale in excellent original condition with a lovely colour and patina.

Dimensions:

Width 199cms

Depth 54cms

Height 112cms

Edwards & Roberts was founded in 1845, and had premises at 21 Wardour Street London. They became one of the leading London cabinet makers and retailers working in a variety of styles, both modern and revivalist. Their business also involved retailing, adapting and restoring the finest antique furniture and there are many examples of their earlier furniture with later embellishments bearing their stamp. Edwards & Roberts specialized in marquetry, inlay and ormolu.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
