Description

A fine cuban mahogany George II Period antique card table by Phillip Bell of London. Having a solid cuban mahogany fold over top which opens to reveal the original baize lined interior above a flamed mahogany veneered frieze, with a concealed oak lined drawer, retaining the original paper makers label 'Phillip Bell Cabinet Maker: Upholders and Undertaker at Number 23 in St. Paul's Churchyard London'. Having fine Chippendale carved mouldings and pierced spandrels, the whole supported on square mahogany supports with internal chamfering. English circa 1750

Condition: This table is in excellent original condition, wonderful colour and patina

Philip Bell is recorded as working from St Paul's Churchyard between 1758-74. He succeeded his father Henry Bell who had founded the firm in 1736 and, when Philip came of age, he assisted his widowed mother Elizabeth with the running of the firm. Known pieces of furniture with Philip Bell's label are generally good quality serviceable pieces of furniture although a few recorded pieces are decorated with carving, see The Dictionary of English Furniture Makers, 1660 -1840, Leeds 1996, p.17.
