Antique Timuri Tribal Rug, Western Afghanistan.

Description

This magnificent rug was made by Timuri tribes in western Afghanistan during the last quarter of the 19th century. The field design consists of Turkmen-type guls which appear to disappear under the borders and out into infinity. Therefore the borders are simply capturing a small part of that infinite pattern and protecting the inner paradise from evil spirits getting in. The light-coloured guls and the outer 'tree' border pattern, are knotted in camel-hair.
