Old Sheffield Plate is a layered combination of copper and silver used in the 18th and early 19th century as a substitute for the then prohibitively expensive sterling silver. Invented (accidentally) by Thomas Boulsover in 1743, it was produced by fusing together a thick layer of copper between two thinner layers of silver to make the wide variety of items that are so preciously collected today.
