Quiet Street Antiques of Bath has dated this piece to the 1860s.
Complete with its original rouge antico marble base this was first exhibited in wax in 1848 and in bronze in 1850. 21cms high; 42cms wide and 22 cms deep.

Pierre Jules Mene (1810-1871) was one of the most prolific and influential of the French sculptors of the 'animalier' school. He won many medals at a number of the Paris 'Salons' and his work is widely collected.
