William IV Nathaniel Mills Silver Abbotsford House Castle Top Snuff Box

19th century
Description

Superb William IV silver snuff box by renowned maker Nathaniel Mills decorated with a cast "castle top" scene depicting Abbotsford House. The reverse has a cross-hatched design, now worn and a vacant cartouche. Bright cut engraved detail around the edges and pretty thumb catch. Gilded inside and each half hallmarked for Birmingham 1837.

It measures 6.4cm by 3.7cm wide and 1.3cm deep and weighs 47g/1.5ozt. Condition is very good; there is a very small mark to the front top left corner which appears to be where a small spot of corrosion has been previously treated. Otherwise surface wear is light to the front, a little more to the reverse as previously mentioned and the gilding is good inside. The hinge and opening/closing movement is perfect and snug.
