Antique Arts and Crafts Ladies Orkney Chair

1900 - 1920
Description

Good example of an authentic early 20th Century lady's 'Orkney' chair. So called because they were designed in such a way to shelter the occupant from cold Orkney draughts. They are made exclusively in Orkney and were developed through local island tradition using materials that were readily available.

This chair is constructed of pine with a drop in rush seat. The back is made from oat straw and bent grass, bound together with cord from twisted bent grass. The back is almost straight before it curves out gradually to create a comfortable seat. The arms come forward and finish in delicately carved scrolls.

The chair is in excellent condition for its age. It has been cleaned and lightly waxed to retain its natural aged patina. Each joint is clean and sturdy. The straw work is strong and free from any major damages. It is not without some small little nicks and frays but nothing to concern us. A good honest chair overall.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions please ask.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
