Pair George III Pierced Silver Wine Coasters Turned Mahogany Georgian Bottle

18th century
Description

Fabulous pair of Georgian silver wine coasters with turned mahogany bases. The sides have a pierced frieze with bright cut engraving running around the top and bottom topped with beaded rim. Engraved garlands run around middle interspersed with pierced decoration of neoclassical urns and a single engraved cartouche with crest of a rampant lion wearing coronet. Hallmarks are rubbed but dates can be read as 1780 and 1786 and maker's mark appears to be RM possibly for Richard Meach or Richard Mills.

They measure 4 3/4" across the base, 4 1/2" rim to rim and 1 5/8" high. Total weight is 279g. Condition is very good with light surface wear, good and appropriate for age and use.
