Beautiful bust-length portrait of a lady c.1830. The sitter is elegantly dressed and wears ringlets in her hair and has been portrayed seated in an interior. During this period hair was worn parted in the middle and then braided or ''turned up'' and pinned into a roll or low bun at the back of the neck. The style and type is of the English studio portrait but most notably the influence of Margaret Sarah Carpenter who was a very successful and talented portrait painter in England.
 
Margaret Sarah Carpenter was born in Salisbury and later moved to London. From 1812 she exhibited at the Royal Academy almost every year from 1814-66 (147 portraits), and 50 works at the BI from 1819-53. Her style was similar to Sir Thomas Lawrence and she finished one of his portraits after his death in 1830 (''Mrs Brandling'', exhibited SBA 1832, 164).
