A Fine Pair of Early 19th Century Collectors Cabinets. Property of Thomas Vernon Wollaston 1822-1878.

19th century
Description

This unique and historic pair of collectors cabinets were the property of the very famous 19th century entomologist, thomas vernon wollaston.

Wollaston was primarily a coleopterist, ( one who studies beetles) and despite his religious beliefs, a great friend of charles darwin. Wollastons collections reside with the hope department, oxford university museum. Great britain.

The pair each contain eleven drawers fashioned in mahogany and each drawer has a close fitting glazed top to protect and keep dust free the contents. The cabinets are resplendent in beautifully seasoned honduras mahogany, the patina of which is only achieved over a very long period and is superb.

The drawers have cast brass, lacquered knobs and the cock beading to the base line of each drawer is ebony.

These are, in every way, superlative pieces. The provenance alone is spectacular but the aesthetic and practical qualities undeniable.

It is seldom that items of this interest and importance become available on the market. To be able to own furniture that has in it's life been viewed and appreciated by a luminary such as wollaston and, indeed, charles darwin himself, is exceptional!

All questions are welcome and delivery can be arranged. Personal viewing is welcome at our dedicated showrooms by appointment.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
