Fine George II Walnut Featherbanded Bureau with Original Brasses and Superb Colour

18th century
Description

Finest quality George II English walnut bureau dating from circa 1740 and retaining original brass handles and escutcheons throughout. The oak carcase and oak lined drawers dressed with figured walnut, beautifully bookmatched with a deep crossbanded border to the top and fall inset by beautiful inset featherband borders. The burr walnut interior particularly striking and original. The small drawers with quarter sawn oak linings and fine hand cut dovetails. Exceptional patina and colour. In superb original condition throughout. The drawers with all original lock and an original working key.

.

The fall with bookmatched pippin and burr walnut veneers and finely shaped lip and fitted with a hand coloured olive green thick hide leather to the shaped original recess. The fall lowers smoothly on original hinges to rest on two small extending oak lopers and reveals an exquisitely fitted interior dressed in pippin and burr walnut veneers. The small inner drawers with matching beautiful featherbanded borders, fully lined with slender oak boards and finely cut dovetailed joints.

.

With a deep well with original cover and with two concealed secret drawers flanking the central door – the whole central section is removable and the door retains its original hinges.

.

A magnificent example in superb original condition. Rare to find such an early walnut bureau with original handles and escutcheons and drawer locks with original key.

.

Condition: a couple of very old and well blended veneer repairs to the crossbanding, an old movement crack to one side above the loper – not going anywhere. Minor losses to two escutcheons, marks and bruises consistent with age and use and giving character and patina; minor restorations, well blended and very old.

.

This is a very beautiful and original small bureau in superb condition for age. The colour and patina and excellent.

.

Strongly recommended.

In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
