Rare 17thc Fireback and Grate

A Rare 17thc Fireback with later 19thc Grate reconditioned and blacked.The Fireback is a rare example of the early survival of a cast iron back. It is dated 1697 and the design is superimposed with the initials of the monarchs of England, William and Mary. The decorative details showing a central motif of Aesop's fable of the stork and the fox surrounded with a course of fruit and flowers and the top decorated with further flowers and filigree. The rear showing the bubbly texture indicative of early sand-pit casting.
