As a more formal portrait of one of the city’s young street sellers this is more unusual. Beautifully painted in oil on canvas, the subject is shown half length wearing a broad brimmed hat and ragged outfit, with pipe and basket of clams. In the background the white sail of a boat and buildings catching the light are reflected in the waters of the lagoon. With a clear signature as A. Paoletti di Giovanna Venezia on the lower right hand edge. Canvas is in excellent condition, presented on the original stretcher. In the original gilt frame with an oval aperture (19?x17?) and heavy moulded plaster detail, missing in places.
