19th Century Mens Silk Waistcoat with Damask Floral Decoration

19th century
Description

Gorgeous early 19th Century waistcoat of the highest quality made of the finest silk, lined with cotton and delicately decorated with a woven floral pattern. A garment of this quality and design is likely to have been worn by a gentleman on his wedding day.

The front of the waistcoat is a delicate creamy golden silk and there are two lined front pockets. There are seven buttons / button holes and the buttons are covered in the same silk fabric. There is a very nice collar on the waistcoat that sits high around the back of the neck and extends to about half way down the garment.

The back panel of the waistcoat is a light cotton material with two pairs of ties at the base of the back of the garment to give structure and fit to the waistcoat when worn.

It was originally made as a men's waistcoat but nowadays could suit either sex. For a rough guide to size and fit I am a woman's size 10 (34" around the bust") and the waistcoat fits me about right.

Measurements :

Shoulder to shoulder : 12"

Bottom of armhole to armhole across the back : 19"

Length collar to bottom : 21"

Please bare in mind the ties at the back give a lot of structure and shape and are adjustable to within certain limits.

Condition:

The waistcoat is in fairly good condition for its age and it is generally clean and neat. I have not attempted to clean it in any way for fear of damaging it but I'm sure it could be cleaned up further by an expert if desired.

There is a little bit of damage on the inside of the collar at the back of the neck where a small area of silk has worn through (see photo). Also a small pinhole under the right arm hole (see photo) and two loose threads by the bottom edge (see photo). On the inside of the waistcoat there is some staining on the lining below the arms (see photo).

The waistcoat still displays beautifully and has a gorgeous look to it. The wear really is minimal and I have described every last thing to be 100% accurate so you know you can buy with confidence.

The best description I can give comes from the photos so please have a look at them all carefully and if you have any questions at all please ask.

In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
