Officer of the Watch Telescope, Ross London C.1890

19th century
Description

This is an antique, 'Officer of the Watch' telescope dating to the latter part of the 19th century.

Inscribed on the draw tube 'Ross, London, No.29975, Sold by Robinson & Co., Singapore', this achromatic telescope is typical of the type used on board ship in the late 19th century.

Ross, based in London, were a respected name in optics and produced quality scientific instruments. Robinsons, a pioneering and leading department store in Singapore.

Made from German silver, a copper, zinc and nickel alloy, this telescope retains it's original 'ox blood' red leather sleeve with braided twists at either end with the stitching in good order. The draw tube slides easily with all tubes dent free.

The optics are in good order providing a clear, sharp image and benefit from a retractable sun shade. The swivel eye cover and lens cap absent as usual.

Dimensions:

Objective Lens Diameter: 3cm (1.25'')

Closed Length: 43.5cm (17.25'')

Max Drawn Length (incl. sun shade): 63cm (24.75'')

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
