The case is lantern shaped in the Gothic style with pieced panels to the front which allow the pendulum to be glimpsed swinging inside the case. To the front of the case is a coat of arms and to the sides are handles styled as mythical creatures. To the top is a bell top, with pieced bell and a finial. The clock stands on its original integral base on scroll bracket feet. Candelabra have matching bases and delicately modelled candelabra arms. The set is only 5 1/4" deep, so could easily stand on most mantles.
The dial is copper mounted with 12 individual enamel cartouches and decorated with an engraved pattern and a minute ring.
The movement by the famous Japy clockmaking company and is marked Japy Fils, 1855 on the movement backplate. Being an early movement, it has the outside hammer return spring rather than the inside spring on later movements. It is of the excellent quality and has been fully overhauled by our clockmaker who has fully stripped and cleaned the movement, fitted two new springs and tested the movement until satisfied that it will run with no problems at all. It runs for 8 days on a full wind and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. You can watch a video of the clock, including running an striking below.
Condition of the case is excellent with clean and bright finish to the gilding. There is some very minor wear / discolouration to the original gilding. Candelabra arms are very slightly distorted. The dial is also in excellent condition with no chips or scratches to the dial cartouches.
Complete with pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.
