John Upjohn London Fusee Bracket Clock.

19th century
Description

A quality English Georgian period bracket clock. An arched pediment with cast handle. Fishscale side fretwork and fretted panelled front. A convex glass to the cast bezel. Fluted brass case sides and standing on bun feet. A convex painted dial with central alarm disc. An 8-day duration, twin fusee mechanism striking the hours on a bell. Pull cord hour repeating and pull cord to wind alarm. An engraved backplate signed 'Upjohn, Exeter'. Circa 1800.

Height 17 " / 43 cms Width 12"/ 30 cms Depth 7 " / 18 cms.

The Upjohn family of clockmakers worked in Exeter and London in the 18th and 19th centurys. They are highly regarded clockmakers and are well documented in Ponsfords' Devon Clockmakers' book. John Upjohn took over the Exeter business from William in 1803 having started in London in 1791.
