Antique Omega Pocket Watch, Camerer Kuss & Co

An antique silver Omega pocket watch originally retailed by Camerer Kuss & Co of London.

The watch has a stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The serial number of 2,500,894 is underneath the dial, and this dates it back to around 1905. There is also a brevet, or patent, number 8760 which relates to an 1895 patent by the Brandt brothers, founders of Omega. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover… it has some surface scratches, and a previous owner’s name has been scratched into it.

The watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are Swiss hallmarks for 935 in both of the back covers, together with the early Omega mark inside the outer cover. Overall the case is in good condition with just an indentation to the bottom of the bezel. The engine turned detail is still nice and crisp.

The watch glass has minor marks but is very acceptable.

The signed white enamel looks to be in good condition to the naked eye but through a magnifying loupe, there are two faint hairline cracks visible.

Camerer Cuss & Co was a partnership of David Kuss and Andrew Kammerer who came to London from Germany in 1845 to import and sell Black Forest clocks. The Kammerers and the Kusses were farmers in neighbouring villages in the Black Forest and were related by marriage. David Kuss was an astute and energetic businessman who brought a new dimension to the business and established the first Camerer Cuss shop in Shepherds Bush in 1879. At the beginning of the First World War there was much ill feeling towards anybody with a German sounding name so the spelling of the family name was changed to Cuss. The business developed a profitable clock-winding and maintenance round and they always went out on their rounds with various items of jewellery attached to the ends of watch chains and in waistcoat pockets, to satisfy customers’ need for special gifts for every occasion.
