An Antique Pine Devon Long Box or Swordbox

Description

This antique pine box is from north devon and is of the genre often referred to as 'sword boxes', although in my opinion this is a somewhat romanticised description of what was really a general possession box owned by most families and comprising an important part of the very limited list of affordable furniture.

These boxes were for robes, linen, sometimes even food and all things valuable. They were often positioned at the end of a bed or under a window where they afforded additional seating.

This box dates from the late 18th to early 19th centuries and is made of pine. It carries the marks of time commensurate with it's age.
