Tea was a fashionable and expensive commodity in the 18th century, consumed only by the wealthy. Consequently the boxes or "caddies" in which tea was stored, to keep it dry and safe, were finely made and sometimes highly decorative. Today they are avidly collected, particularly if small, of unusual or elegant shape and sometimes if constructed of unusual materials.
