A portrait of a young sitter, bust length, draped in a red cloak, blue sash, and cravat. The past the shoulders full bottomed wig and the middle part were popular in the 1680s right up to the 1720s. However, the loose curls as in the present portrait, were fashionable through the 90s. After 1700 they appeared much tighter. The silks and this type of wig were excessively expensive during the period and thus available only to the upper echelons of society.An endearing portrait of this young sitter with an insightful characterisation. The work is from the circle of Johann Kerseboom who came to work in England from the Rhineland in the 1680s, with his uncle who was also a painter. He had a successful practice in London as a painter of portraits.
