A George III Solid Silver Vinaigrette 1823

18th century
Description

This unusual and lovely 'Saddle-Bag' shaped Silver Vinaigrette was made by Ledsam & Vale in 1823. In good condition with only minor wear despite its age, the casing is decorated with a geometric engine turned design. The inside grill is pierced with a geometric design and retains its golden gilt coating. The inside gilt is still vibrant, the box closes well and all hallmarks are present and clear.

Vinaigrettes, popular from the late 18th century through to the end of the 19th century, were small containers used for holding various aromatic substances, usually dissolved in vinegar. A tiny piece of sponge, soaked in the liquid, was contained beneath a grill or perforated cover. Ladies used to carry a vinaigrette with them to combat the aroma from the waste products common in cities. Likewise, the practice of wearing tight corsets also regularly caused woman to faint, requiring the need to carry smelling salts. These little boxes were often exchanged between lovers as tokens of affections.

This is a delightful example in very good condition and very unusual and rare shape / design and would make a wonderful gift or would add to anyone's collection.
