Portrait Of A Gentleman C.1665, Circle Of Pieter Borsseler (c.1633-c.1717)
Status:This item has been sold Sold by:Titan Fine Art
*Excellent opportunity to purchase an item of great provenance and historical significance. This work formed part of a collection from Sir Jasper and Lady More, family seat Linley Hall (see photo).
Large 17th century old master portrait of a gentleman. The sitter has been depicted in a black robe, falling band, and long natural hair fashionable in the mid-century. Exceptional characterisation of the sitter and very good realism to the face - colour, form, shading painted with stark realism. As this portrait comes from the collection of Sir Jasper and Lady More of Linely Hall the sitter is likely to be an ancestor (the Mores of Linley Hall or the Hope-Edwardes of Netley Hall). The collection was the result of dedicated collecting over five centuries and offered an interesting view about the lives and relationships of these two families — as well as about English society over the last 500 years. Housed in a fine beautiful frame in excellent condition.
The sale of this portra...it is a rare opportunity to acquire an item from this interesting collection.
Provenance: Sir Jasper and Lady More of Linley Hall, Shropshire
Linley is a Grady I Listed builing in Shropshire England. It has its origins in 1580 when it was purchased by Robert More. His grandson decided to build a new home to a design by Henry Joynes of London, Clerk of Works at Kensington Palace. This took place between 1743 and 1746. The property descended within the family until very recently. Interestingly, about 300m south of the Hall, is the site of a ancient Roman villa of high status. Part of a mosaic excavated from the villa is reset in More church.
Pieter Borselaer was born into an old noble family Bostelaar in Middelburg. He studied between 1651 and 1654 under Thomas Willeboirts Bosschaert in Antwerp before moving to England around 1665. There he worked for approximately 15 years painting mainly portraits of English nobles and even Queen Catherine of Braganza. A notable and celebrated example is a portrait of William Shakespeare c.1668. See also Samuel Butler in National Portrait Gallery London.
