Portrait Of A Gentleman, Circle Of Phillipe De Champaigne (1602-1674)

Large 17th Century master portrait of a young gentleman, presented in a black doublet and white neckerchief. The sitter is presented simply and without decoration. His sober costume and broad shoulders conform to contemporary ideals of masculinity and fashion and the high quality satin doublet suggests that the sitter was wealthy. Black clothing was reserved for the most formal occasions (including having one''s portrait painted) as black dye was expensive and faded quickly. Even Puritans and Calvinists did not wear black every day contrary to popular belief.
The sitter in this portrait bears a striking resemblance to Noėl de Bullion (Lord Chancellor of The Order of the Holy Spirit – France) who was a French aristocrat and politian. Champaigne is thought to have depicted this sitter (also dated 1656).
Very finely painted with wonderful realism to the face and skin colour, shading, and the minute details. Very good characterisation of the sitter. The canvas is dated 1656 a...ccording to an inscription on the lining. This early portrait dates from the time when Oliver Cromwell was Lord Protector of England and is a splendid early example.
The frame is of the highest quality and very impressive. It is of the highest craftsmanship and in fine condition and a work of art in its own right.
Phillipe de Champaigne (1602-1674) was of Flemish origin and lived and worked in France. He was an exceptional artist and a founding member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture
