A 1920s Phenix Pocket Watch

A 1920s Phenix pocket watch.

The Phenix Watch Co SA was founded in Porrentruy in 1873 as Dubail, Monnin, Frossard & Cie. The company is believed to have been the first Swiss watch manufacturer to register a movement calibre and they won a gold medal at the Paris Exposition in. The actual Phenix name came into being in the 1920s.

The watch has a stem-winding movement, signed Phenix, which is working nicely and keeping good time to within around three minutes over 24 hours. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover which is engraved and mentions the 1900 Paris medal.

The watch measures 49mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The watch has a galonne case which means it is made out of 800 silver with a rose gold wash around the bezel, the centre section and also around the edge of the case back. There is some rubbing to the wash, mainly to the centre and the back. Other than that, the case is in good condition and the engine turned detail to the back is still nice and crisp. The inside of the case back has the Phenix logo and name.

The watch glass has light marks and a 5mm scratch.

The white enamel dial looks good to the naked eye… if viewed through a magnifying loupe, there are two or three very faint hairline cracks. Charming ornate hands, subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute markers. The dial is signed F Johansson, Stockholm… this would have been the original retailer of the watch.
