J W Benson Silver Pocket Watch, Chain and Box

1900 - 1920
Description

An antique J W Benson silver pocket watch with chain and box.

J W Benson originated in 1847, founded by James William Benson and Samuel Suckley Benson. They were regarded as one of Victorian London’s most prestigious retail jewellers and they also manufactured their own watch movements. Benson had prestigious premises at 43 Cornhill and, when the original partnership was dissolved and James William Benson took over the running of the business, they also opened a branch at 33 Ludgate Hill.

This particular watch has a key-winding movement which is working well. A J W Benson key is included. The movement is signed J W Benson, Ludgate Hill, by Warrant to H M the late Queen Victora, and it also has the patent number 4658 which was for an integrated dust ring which also acted as a movement carrier. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.

The watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside both case backs for London 1904 with a maker’s mark for J W Benson so everything ties up very nicely.

A watch glass is in very nice condition.

The signed dial is in beautiful condition with just one tiny faint hairline crack between the centre and the sub seconds dial.

The watch comes on a silver albert which measures 28cm long including the T-bar and the clasp, and it has a fob. The chain and the fob are a little later in date with both being hallmarked for 1909.

Also included is the antique J W Benson presentation box.

All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
