Victorian Glazed Bookcase Cabinet, C.1840

19th century
Description

This is an antique, Victorian, glazed bookcase cabinet dating to c.1840.

Raised on a plinth base with subtle classical overtones, the mahogany on this tall bookcase has a good, desirable pale colour to the exterior consistent with age. Both upper and lower cabinets with working locks and keys.

The lower cabinet with single fixed shelf within, has a pair of arched, field panel doors displaying excellent grain detail in the flame mahogany bordered with generous mouldings. Flanking the cupboard, a pair of applied scrolled brackets decorate the uprights beneath a pair of oak lined, ogee frieze drawers.

The upper cabinet features a pair of arched doors with original glazing enclosing a series of four, adjustable bookshelves. Above, the cornice caps the piece bringing proportion with a flame cross banded frieze and generous moulding.

A nice example, with solid joints and construction, delivered waxed, polished and ready for the home.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
