Rare Antique French Ebony and Intricately Inlaid Box - Dove C.1860

19th century
For Sale by Puckerings
Description

An absolute gem of a box, very rare with the most intricate marquetry inlay featuring a central bird to the lid, looking like a Dove to me.

The box is French in origin and dating to around 1860 made from Ebony and inlaid with a plethora of exotic timers and Mother of Pearl. The lock is most unusual, a type I have not seen before. Firstly the pin comes from the bottom and secures into the top. The key is turned clockwise twice and two pins shoot out from the sides to secure the lock; working fine now, these old locks are notoriously temperamental!

The box came to me with these pieces of Lace in, it could be a lace box or sewing box, but would equally make a good jewelry box with the interior retaining the original velvet lining.

There is an old grain crack to the top, which is stable and helped by the re-polished finish. Very good condition measuring 8 1/2" x 6 1/2" x 3 1/4" tall.

In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Produced during the mid-to-late nineteenth century, these decorative caskets frequently feature ebonised or ebony grounds embellished with intricate marquetry, depicting floral motifs, scrolling foliage, or naturalistic birds using contrasting timbers.

Craftsmen employed dense hardwoods such as ebony alongside various fruitwoods, brass, mother-of-pearl, and bone to create detailed marquetry and pictorial inlay patterns on small wooden vessels.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples display hand-cut timber veneers, period lock mechanisms, natural age-related patination across surfaces, and slight structural irregularities characteristic of hand craftsmanship.

A decorative inlaid casket functions well as an accent piece displayed on a sideboard, coffee table, or bookshelf, adding historical detail and texture to contemporary living spaces.

Keep the timber clear of direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to prevent veneer movement. Dust gently using a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality natural beeswax sparingly to preserve the finish.
