A Gents World War 1 Silver Trench Watch

A World War 1 silver trench watch.

The watch has a Swiss A Schild hand-winding movement which is working well. A Schild supplied ébauches, or blank movements, to many different companies to be finished and cased.

The watch measures 33.5mm diameter excluding the winding crown and the fixed wire lugs. The bezel and case back both have screw-on fittings, a nice sign of quality. There are hallmarks inside the case back for London (import mark), 1918, together with an importer’s mark for George Stockwell. From 1 June 1907, Stockwells acted as assay agents, facilitating the import into Britain of foreign gold and silver items, which had to be assayed and hallmarked in a UK assay office before being released for retail. The case is in good condition with just a smooth indentation to the back.

The lens is in good condition.

The white enamel dial looks good to the naked eye. If viewed through a magnifying loupe, there is a faint hairline running from the centre towards number 8. Blued steel hands and an outer minute track.

A new black leather strap has been fitted.
