Attributed to Sir Martin Archer-Shee RA (1769-1850),
three quarter length, standing with arms folded, wearing red military tunic,
oil on canvas, unsigned, A postcard with the picture states the sitter is Lieut.
General George Morland Hicks CB (1791-1873), Colonel of the 70th Bengal Native Infantry Regiment
painted by Sir Martin Archer-Shee in or about 1846.
The postcard also states the painting has been in the family for four generations, there is also more information about the sitter etc. see photo.
Another label gives details of old restoration.
The painting is housed in a gilt frame possibly original which is in good condition.
Overall the portrait is in very good restored condition with some minor cracquelure.
Size of the painting including frame is height 19¼ x 16 inches approx. (49 x 41 cm)

Sir Martin Archer-Shee RA (1769-1850)
was a British portrait painter and president of the Royal Academy. Martin Shee studied art in the Royal Dublin Society
and came to London. There, in 1788, he was introduced to Joshua Reynolds, on whose advice he studied in the schools of the Royal Academy.
In 1789 he exhibited his first two pictures.
On the death of Sir Thomas Lawrence in 1830,
Shee was chosen president of the Royal Academy in his stead and shortly afterwards received a knighthood.
In 1831 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society.
