A gents 1950s Smiths wristwatch for J W Benson.

J W Benson was a highly regarded watch and clock maker who was based in London and traded from 1847 to the early 1970s.

The company held various royal warrants including watch maker to Queen Victoria, the Prince of Wales, the Tsar of Russia and several other royal families.

During the first World War, the Benson factory was bombed and thousands of clocks and watches were destroyed. From then on, Benson was purely a retailer who used high quality Swiss movements and also English movements from Smiths.

This particular watch has an English made Smiths hand-winding movement, with 16 jewels, which is working nicely. The movement is signed with the J W Benson name.

The watch measures 32mm diameter excluding the winding crown and the lugs. The stainless steel case is in good condition and was made by the British Watch Case Company.

The lens is in good order.

The dial is signed J W Benson, Made in England. The dial is in its original finish… there is some light freckling but overall the condition is very acceptable for a 1950s piece.

A new black leather strap has been fitted.
