19th century
Description

St.George Hare RI ROI 1857-1933 Oil Portrait

We are very pleased to offer for sale this very well executed portrait oil on canvas by the Irish artist St. George Hare, who has signed the painting HARE in the lower left hand corner.

>

This fine early 20th century oil portrait superbly depicts an Irish gentleman smartly dressed in a businessmans attire, perhaps with a slight twinkle in his eye, who wears a brown jacket, an ochre striped waistcoat, with a pocket watch, who is seated in an armchair with carved arms.

>

St. George Hare was born in Limerick in Ireland on 5th July 1857, the son of an Englishman. He studied at Limerick School of Art under Nicholas Brophy, before going to London in 1875 to become a student at the Royal Academy Schools at South Kensington.

>

He began exhibiting both oils and watercolours in his early 20s, showing at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1881 and subsequently at the Royal Academy with 'The Little Mother' (32 exhibits), and the RI (121), ROI (143), Royal Society of Artists in Birmingham (15) and the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool (39).

>

He painted in oils, watercolours and pastels. He was a painter of portraits - the Hoare family were his patrons - historical narrative, especially featuring nude women e.g. 'Victory of Faith' and genre.

>

He lived most of his life in London. He was a founder Member of the Chelsea Arts Club in 1891. In 1892 he was elected a full Member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour and in the same year, a full Member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.

>

While a student at the RA Schools, he lodged in Kings Road Chelsea. In census records for 1901, he was living at 13 Milton Chambers Chelsea, with his wife Charlotte, his son Sydney and a servant and in 1911 at 134 Kenilworth Court, Lower Richmond Road, Putney. He died on 30th January 1933 and his death was registered in Chelsea.

>

He is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club), The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood, The Dictionary of British Artists of Grant Waters and his London exhibitions up to 1893 are listed in Graves Dictionary (58).

>

Examples of his work may be viewed on google and, in the flesh, at The V & A, National Gallery of Ireland, National Gallery of Victoria, Australia, the National Trust Stourhead (Seat of the Hoare Family), Limerick City Art Gallery.
