Description

Nice quality Edwardian period narrow mahogany dropleaf coffee table, raised on pierced end supports with lower joining stretcher.

Taking up little space when not in use, the side leaves are easily raised to form a larger sturdy table surface when required.

Having original polish finish with a cross-banded edge, this lovely table is in nice condition. Circa 1900

Introduced in the mid-nineteenth century and named after Harriet, Duchess of Sutherland, the Sutherland table is a narrow drop-leaf table designed to take up minimal floor space when closed while expanding into a functional tea or side table when the flaps are raised.

Edwardian examples were commonly crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany or walnut, frequently featuring boxwood or satinwood line inlay, brass castors, and iron rule-joint hinges.

Authentic pieces display period-accurate construction including hand-cut rule joints on the hinged leaves, slim gate-leg support mechanisms, original brass castors, and characteristic natural oxidisation on the underside of the timber.
