Regency papier-mache decorative ware refers to light, durable household objects and trays produced in Britain during the early 19th century using compressed paper pulp or laminated paper sheets. These items were typically coated in dark lacquer, known as japanning, and decorated with elaborate gilded or hand-painted botanical and chinoiserie designs.

Nineteenth-century papier-mache trays were crafted by gluing multiple sheets of paper over shaped wooden moulds or pressing paper pulp under high pressure. Once dried, the tray was polished, baked, covered in black varnish, and hand-gilded or painted before receiving a final protective clear coat.
