A good quality oak longcase clock by John Draper of Maldon c.1760

Maker: John Draper Maldon (Essex) 1760

Date: 1760

Height: 7ft 3” Width: 19” Depth: 9.5”

A good quality Georgian oak longcase clock with a twelve inch break arch brass and silvered dial signed John Draper, Maldon. The finely figured quarter sawn oak case of good colour and patina. The pagoda topped hood surmounted by wooden gilded finials, below turned columns with gilded wooden capitals. The long trunk door with well figured oak and moulded edge, box base with shaped plinth. Oak backboard, original lock and key.

The twelve inch break arch brass and silvered dial signed John Draper, Maldon. Having subsidiary seconds dial and ringed calendar dial above VI. The finely matted dial centre with gilded ornate cast spandrels. Silvered and engraved HoHo bird to the arch - the HoHo bird comes from the mythical Japanese version of the Phoenix and is said to represent good luck/fortune, longevity, fidelity and wisdom. The hoho bird first started appearing in England in the 18th century on Georgian furniture and porcelain.

The high quality movement is of eight day duration with five knopped pillars, anchor escapement and strikes the hours on a bell.

The original lead weights and brass bob pendulum

Finely fretted and wrought blued steel hands.
