Description

This ranks amongst the very best of early Teke work from the mid 19th century. Finely knotted yet the glowing madder-red makes this rug just fabulous. The field design contains 3 vertical rows of 9 Teke 'chuval' guls in shades of indigo-blue, ivory, turquoise and madder-red. I love the elms (skirts) where the weaver has depicted very subtle 'trees'. Possibly made as a wedding rug for the bride and groom to stand on at their marriage ceremony, the quality will show her desirability as a weaver and wife! One of my very favourite rugs.
