Collinge Antiques has dated this piece to the 19th Century.
The raised edge to the marble suggests it was intended for drinks but it would also serve as a fine pedestal for a large piece of china or a work of art perhaps, allowing the piece to be admired from each side. Exquisitely carved walnut base with four fluted columns and crossed base with large finial at the mid point. No maker’s mark has been found but the underside of the marble carries a pencil inscription for Snell & Co. London cabinet makers whose work (including a ‘Walnut-tree cabinet sideboard’) was included in the Great Exhibition of 1851. This piece could certainly be described as being of exhibition quality. Snell and Co. ceased trading in 1855.
