Marylebone Antiques has dated this piece to the 1900s.
You can see the many layers of old preparation showing through the surface, which gives of many colours. What's even better, is that the needlepoint is original to the chairs & is also in great condition. The needlepoint is also a perfect compliment to the colour on the frames. There is a lot of detailed carvings all over the frames. The frames have a great shape all over & the wear on the paint work is all natural. These chairs are exactly as I got them & they seem very sturdy. Personally, I would leave them as they are, although if the needlepoint fabric was steam cleaned, the colours would come out more vividly. I'm not sure of the exact age, but would hazard a guess at around the 1860-80's period, but judging from the quality of the carving, they may be older.
