Psyche Revived by Cupids Kiss - After Antonio Canova

19th century
Description

Stunning 19th century reproduction of the famous statue of Psyche revived by Cupid's kiss by Antonio Canova.

The statue is either terracotta or biscuit and is signed Canova and stamped with the number 1156. It is in good condition with one small chip and invisible hairline crack both of which can be restored if desired. It is a beautiful and decorative piece.

Antonio Canova (1755-1822) was a famous Italian sculptor and a favourite of Napoleon Bonaparte. By 1800 he was one of the most celebrated artists in Europe. The Psyche and Cupid statue is regarded as a masterpiece of neoclassical sculpture. It shows a moment of great emotion when Cupid has just revived Psyche from a deathlike sleep. The original marble is in the Louvre and there is a second in the Hermitage Museum.
