Franz Xaver BERGMANN was a professional metal chaser who opened a small foundry in Vienna in 1860. His son (also Franz) inherited the business and moved to larger premises in 1900. The term "cold-painted" refers to the decoration of several layers of so-called "dust paint". This colouring did not need firing, hence the term: 'cold-painted". The know-how to mix this is now lost.
