Puckerings has dated this piece to the Victorian era.
The domed lid is beautifully engraved with hand chasing and a vacant oval cartouche to both from and back, which when opened reveals a removable pierced tray which is where blocks of butter would sit, the underneath would be filled with crushed ice to keep the butter fresh and chilled.
The frame is marked but I am unsure of the maker. Approximately 8" x 5 3/4" x 6" tall.
