Elegant Antique English Silver Plated Revolving Butter Dish C.1890

Description

A superb late Victorian butter dish, this type is always popular and in high demand, they are so impressive particularly when entertaining.

The four highly decorative leg terminate with a roaring lion at the top and a hoof at the bottom, all supported by an x-frame on the underside. The domed lid is beautifully engraved with hand chasing and a vacant oval cartouche to both from and back, which when opened reveals a removable pierced tray which is where blocks of butter would sit, the underneath would be filled with crushed ice to keep the butter fresh and chilled.

The frame is marked but I am unsure of the maker. Approximately 8" x 5 3/4" x 6" tall.
