An Antique Silver Chronograph Pocket Watch, 1914

An antique silver chronograph pocket watch.

The watch has a stem-winding movement which is working nicely and keeping good time to within around three minutes over 24 hours. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.

The watch measures 55mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside both of the case backs for Chester 1914 with a case maker’s mark for William Hammon of Coventry. Quite often silver goods were sent to Chester for hallmarking, rather than the nearer Birmingham, because a Chester mark was more often highly regarded. The case has some unevenness to the back but otherwise is in good condition.

The thick glass lens is in good condition.

The enamel dial has a double outer register scaled to 300. There are four faint hairline cracks to the centre section of the dial.

The chronograph is started and stopped by sliding the button to the side of the case. As with the majority of the chronographs of this design, the movement stops too when the chronograph is stopped.

The hands are initially set by way of the pin-set mechanism (easily done and instructions will be included). The minute hand is a later replacement.
