18th.c. Welsh Oak Cwpwrdd Tridarn C.1750

18th century
Description

Delightful little mid 18th.c. example of the form here, just 54" wide and 73" tall. Top section with turned columns, oak back boards and sides. Two door middle piece with good turned droppers and a particularly attractive arched centre panel with unusual mouldings. Large two door cupboard base with a half depth shelf inside. Oak panel doors and sides, original oak backboards. Excellent colour and condition with some later restorations. Cleaned and waxed in our workshops.

Dimensions: width 54", depth 22", height 73".

Before the Welsh dresser came the cwpwrdd tridarn (or three piece cupboard). Recognised now as a distinct form of furniture unique to an area of North West Wales roughly comprised of Snowdonia and Caernarfon. Produced from the mid 17th.c. until the end of the 18th.c. it is itself an adaption of the more common 'court' cupboard, with the addition of a canopied top tier providing an area for the display of the household’s best tableware protected from the dirt and soot of an open fire. Over time this display section grew to include several shelves, the middle cupboard was lost and the form of the typical Welsh dresser emerged.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
