Julie Cartwright Antiques has dated this piece to the 1900s.
It is shaped as a thimble and designed to hold a small silver thimble. The body is embossed all over with flower heads. The swivel handle with ring attachment. It was probably originally part of a Victorian silver chatelaine.

The interior is lined with leather.
The handle is separately hallmarked.
Hallmarks:
GU for George Unite.
Lion Passant.
Birmingham Assay Mark.
Date letter "a" for 1900.
