A Superb 19th Century French Baroque Style Gilt-wood Serpentine Console Table

Description

A superb 19th Century French baroque style gilt-wood serpentine console table. The top of serpentine outline veneered in beautifully figured satinwood with rosewood banding and marquetry inlaid anthemions. With an acanthus carved gilt-wood moulded edge above the guilloche carved frieze with a central shell cartouche. The top supported on four classical caryatids united by carved and swept gilt-wood stretchers. France circa 1880

Dimensions: 78" wide x 25" deep x 36" high (satinwood top 70" wide)

A caryatid is a sculpted female figure serving as an architectural support taking the place of a column or a pillar supporting an entablature on her head. The Greek term karyatides literally means "maidens of Karyai", an ancient town of Peloponnese.

Condition: This console table is in stunning condition, re-gilded approximately 30-40 years ago
