Silver Half Hunter Portsmouth Pocket Watch, 1872

Antique fusee half hunter pocket watch by Portsmouth based watch makers, jewellers and goldsmiths Ezekiel and Emanuel Emanuel. Unusually for a non-London based establishment, they held the Royal Warrant.

Emanuel became the first Jewish mayor of Portsmouth in 1866. He inaugurated many civic improvements including Victoria Park, Clarence Pier and the seafront esplanade. Ezekiel also served on the Town Council.

This particular watch has a fusee movement which is working well and keeping good time to within around five minutes over 24 hours although it actually only runs for 22 hours or so on a full wind. A winding key is included. The movement is protected by a fitted inner cover.

The watch measures 48mm diameter excluding the stem and the loop. The case is silver and all three covers are hallmarked for London 1872 with a case maker’s mark believed to be for Joseph Walton of Upper Charles Street in London. The case is in very nice condition for such an early piece with just some rubbing to the outer edges of the engine turned detail.

Both watch glasses are in good condition.

The enamel dial has a couple of short hairline cracks to the edge, mostly hidden by the bezel, and a short hairline underneath the subsidiary seconds dial. The minute hand is a later replacement.
