Very Small Georgian Thwaites of London Bracket Clock

19th century
Description

A Georgian period very small Lancet top mantel/bracket clock. A mahogany case with recessed brass edged front panels. Lions head side handles. Brass edging to the case front and standing on tapered feet. A 4" (10 cm) convex enamel dial with fine blued steel hands. A cast brass bezel with convex glass. An 8-day duration timepiece fusee mechanism with shaped plates.

The mechanism is stamped 'Thwaites' and numbered 4149 (see extra images). Thwaites are noted clockmakers who also supplied many London clockmakers. This is an early example prior to the partnership with Reed and dates to circa 1808. John Thwaites was master of the Clockmaker's Company in 1815,19 and 1820.
